Planting Tips

Plant in spring, spacing 18–24 inches apart in well-drained, average to lean soil. This native penstemon is adapted to dry, lean conditions and will decline in rich, wet soils. Water regularly for the first few weeks after planting, then reduce significantly as the plant becomes drought tolerant. Good drainage is essential for long-term success.

Care Tips

Cut back spent flower stalks after blooming to encourage additional flower production. White beardtongue is an important nectar plant for hummingbirds and native bees. It tends to be somewhat short-lived but reseeds readily in appropriate conditions, self-perpetuating in the garden. No fertilizing is needed — lean soil is preferred. A graceful native plant for meadow-style gardens and dry borders.
