Pairs well with

Rigid sword-shaped leaves in dusty blue-green, edged with curling white filaments that peel away from the margins. Yucca filamentosa 'Excalibur' is a selection of a native evergreen perennial, growing about 2 feet tall with a 3 to 4 foot spread in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 10.

In early summer a tall stalk rises well above the foliage carrying dozens of creamy white bell-shaped flowers.

Those flowers are pollinated exclusively by yucca moths, which lay their eggs in the flower and pollinate it in the process. Neither the plant nor the moth can reproduce without the other, and it is one of the most specific relationships in North American botany.

Yucca wants full sun and sharp drainage, and it handles drought, heat, salt, and pure sand about as well as anything sold. Wet ground and heavy clay are what kill it. The evergreen foliage holds through winter, and deer leave it alone.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained to dry soil. Space 3–4 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Excellent drainage is essential- yucca will not tolerate wet or poorly drained soil.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it is highly drought tolerant and actually thrives with very little supplemental watering. No regular pruning is needed- simply remove any old or tattered leaf tips or spent flower stalks at the base as needed. No fertilization is generally needed. Deer resistant and virtually pest-free. The bold, sword-like, blue-green foliage provides striking year-round architectural interest. Tall spikes of creamy white flowers appear in summer on mature plants.
